What matters most at 15U and 16U

  • Her position, in detail. Setters: footwork to the ball and decisions. Hitters: approach, arm swing and more than one shot. Liberos and defensive specialists: platform and reads.
  • Serve receive against real pace. Passing a tough serve is what keeps a player on the court at varsity and open-level club.
  • Blocking footwork and timing. Often under-coached, and easy to see on film.
  • Volleyball IQ. Being in the right place before the ball is hit. Coaches read it within a few rallies.
  • Film worth sending. Clean clips of the skills her position is recruited for.

The mental side. Coach Lea builds trust first and corrects without yelling, so a player can hear a hard correction and use it. Read Bond to Battle: how we coach the whole player.

How online coaching works at this age

  1. Film a short clip on a phone. For a Quick Check: one skill, 5 to 10 reps, whole body in frame. For a session: up to 20 minutes of match or practice film with her jersey number and color. How to film a clip.
  2. Coach Lea watches it herself. For a $40 Quick Check she emails the one thing to fix, how to fix it and a drill to start on, within 48 hours of payment.
  3. Go further with live lessons. A 1-on-1 video session is $60 for 30 minutes or $90 for an hour. Monthly plans save 15%.

A parent or guardian sets everything up for an athlete under 18. This works alongside her school or club team, not instead of it: the team gives her games and reps, and we give her individual detail.

The recruiting clock at 15U and 16U

Division I coaches begin evaluating players in 9th grade, and Division II and III coaches in 10th. Division I and II coaches can contact a recruit directly from June 15 after her sophomore year. So film, an honest read on level and a realistic school list should be in place before then.

Start with the free Recruit Matchmaker for a level range. For Coach Lea's own read, a Recruiting Reality Check is a 15-minute call for $40. The recruiting timeline covers each year. No offer or scholarship is ever guaranteed.

Not sure which plays belong in a highlight video? In a Full-Match Film Evaluation Coach Lea reviews a whole match and marks the plays worth showing a college coach.
